Join us for a conversation with “Lennie and Pearl” two girls who grew up in Brooklyn in the 1940’s, fell in love in the Midwest and made a life together in North Carolina. Lennie and Pearl have been together for 47 years and are the subject of the documentary film “Living in the Overlap”. As we near the year anniversary of the vote on Amendment One, which effectively banned same-sex marriage in North Carolina, Lennie and Pearl have just married. Clips and outtakes of the documentary and of their recent wedding will be screened, and then we will open the floor for discussion.
The panel will also include, Marcie and Chantelle Fisher-Borne. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the 2012 lawsuit, Fisher-Borne v. Smith, in Greensboro on behalf of six same-sex couples and their children, challenging the state’s ban on second parent adoption, a process by which one partner in an unmarried gay or straight couple adopts the other partner’s biological or adoptive child.
Marcie and Chantelle Fisher-Borne and Family
Also joining us on the panel is Carrboro Alderperson/Law Professor Lydia Lavelle who was recently involved in reviewing the Supreme Court ruling on Prop 8. Lydia teaches “Sexual Identity and the Law” and “State and Local Governmental Law” at North Carolina Central University School of Law.
